I know that it can be very confusing when it comes to registering your drone. So I will help you out by showing the steps you need to take in order to be successful and get approved. The main reason to register your drone is if you are planning on making money with your drone. You do not want to be caught by the government without it while on the job, you will not only not get paid for that job but will be in a lot of trouble and out of a lot of money. So just do yourself a favor and spend 15-25 minutes to file in the Petition Docket and be worry free.

First I will talk about who, what, and why the FAA wants you to register your drone:

The aircraft registration processing happens in Oklahoma City. The process involves carbon copy forms, which must be filled out and sent in for an aircraft to be registered. The paperwork should completed correctly and the FAA will send you back an “N” registration which is Which Drone Should I Buy? required to be displayed on the aircraft. The N indicates to which country the aircraft is tied to. N = United States.

In accordance with the FAA rules on drones, all commercial drone operators are required to obtain a 333 exemption. The exemptions state, “All aircraft operated in accordance with this exemption must be identified by serial number, registered in accordance with 14 CFR part 47, and have identification (N−Number) Which Drone Should I Buy? markings in accordance with 14 CFR part 45, Subpart C. Markings must be as large as practicable.” This is in addition to the manned aircraft which are registering with the FAA. This is currently only for commercial drones

For now, though, recreational flyers haven’t faced restrictions. Instead, the FAA has issued basic guidelines, including keeping the aircraft under 400 feet, staying at least 5 miles from airports and not flying over large crowds.

Unmanned aircraft users should know they won’t, more than likely, need help registering their drones when the system is in place.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) wants drone owners to know that there’s no need to work with a “drone registration” company to help them file the application required for a registration number.

The Task Force assigned to provide FAA Administrator, Michael Huerta, with recommendations on how the registration process will be conducted is still days away from bringing forth this information.

Officials have stated that registration would allow the FAA to track who owns a drone in case an accident should occur. It would also provide addresses essential to dispensing educational material to users.

So now that we got that out of the way, we shall now talk about how to register your drone:

You will want to go here to read about what is required to register your drone.

Then once you have read that and hopefully understand it (it can be a bear to read) go to the step by step instructions on how to file your petition.

So now there is one more step you have you will want to do. That is to make sure you have everything you need and ready to submit.
